Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a form of therapy originally developed by Dr.
Francine Shapiro, psychologist, in the 1980s. EMDR was designed as a
procedure to help people process traumatic or distressing memories.
The technique of EMDR involves divided attention, where the person thinks
of a distressing memory while at the same time doing a set of eye movements
or some other attentional task. Clinical research indicates that EMDR
is an effective therapeutic technique for processing traumatic experiences
and is particularly effective in targeting the re-experiencing symptoms
of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). EMDR can be a beneficial and
fairly rapid method to deal with and resolve memories of distressing
events, to the extent that after EMDR therapy, distressing memories
may no longer be bothersome.
